It is that time again people when you favorite Renegade gives you the rundown on what is hot and what is just plain not. Today I give the rundown on something a little closer to home or to be more clear a lot closer to school, because my grand institution of learning Walter Sisulu University has declared yet another strike! (Yay, no school!). This time it is the lecturers turn to throw their knees in the air. (Hayi hayi hayi.) But before I jump on the next ride out of town here are some things to think about.
Walter Sisulu University is going through its second strike of the year and its really easy to sit and say to yourself, “what a bunch of cry babies!” but you have to realize that this university (while in it’s previous forms before the unification of Border Technikon and University of Transkei) in particular is one of the university the Apartheid government deemed for “black” students meaning it would be relegated to a second rate institution that was allocated poor facilities and resources but still found a way to produce a lot of great people in this society.
Fast forward to 2012 and even though the country has had 18 years of democracy WSU is still regarded as a second rate university that is given a poor budget and allocated pathetic resources, while the previous white universities that had great provisions in the Apartheid era continue to be a priority today. (some change huh?}
It is also easy to say “Well those universities earned it because they produce star students.” That may be true but also think about the fact that they only allow star students to register yet institutions like WSU take the rejects those star universities deem “unworthy” and make people that matter in society with them.
The Rundown: Treat people like a liability and they act like a liability. Not that I blame all of WSU’s problems on the government but a little consideration would not hurt.
